The Kikay in Me

My work involves a lot of field work – be it out in the mud when I was doing rice research as a PhD student up to now that I am working as corn breeder.

Long hours in the sun meant I need to get as much screen protection as I can. Back then, my only concession was a Nivea SPF30 lotion since I don’t  like putting anything in my face. That was then.

Now, belatedly, I am more careful of my skin and my body. It must be my age, haha... It was a series of discovery or rather curiosity, much like science. I started with a curiosity for foot spas and my love affair with foot spas began. Then massage... which I try to squeeze in every time and everywhere a chance occurs. I love it particularly after several days of road trips and field work. There’s a rice conference that happens every five years in Manila, and I have a partner in crime to go for a spa. For twice in a row already, Rebecca (another rice researcher from the US) and I would always sneak out from the conference and spend a few hours for massage. Our next date would be 2014, but I'm hoping it would be sooner. In  my recent trip to Thailand, I just had to try Thai massage in a massage school at Kasetsart University. I loved every moment of it and that was a perfect way to end my trip to Thailand.
Now, a facial is a must, I learned just last year. I’d like to imagine that getting a facial removes all the pollen that’s collected on my face! These days, my “beauty” regimen consists of a clear soap, a toner and a moisturiser. Make-up, not even lipstick, is still a no-no for me.
Methinks, I’ve said too much... This just proves that scientists are never boring people. We are as kikay as the next person! Hence this blog post, as I would very much like to win the cool prizes for “The Kikay in Me” blog contest sponsored by  KikayMuch.meShoppingera.net, and GetPrettified.com, and HairsandNailsSalon.com.

Where the last two months went...

I have not been maintaining this blog as I should, I know. Probably I needed this jolt from Gilbert Tan's  My Top Ten Most Influential Emerging Blogs for 2010 nomination (whew, quite a mouthful!). Yay! I have not been chronicling my life in GenSan as I should. Well, here are some of the highlights in the last two months.

1. Road trip/food trip to Marbel and back

Worked mixed with lakwatsa... visit to a friend's farm, eating halo-halo at a roadside eatery, and a visit to the Durian Garden in Polomolok.

Patotim, one of the best versions I've had as cooked by Sir Ernie. Gagayahin ko `to!
Buko halohalo in one of eateries in the outskirts of Marbel.
Sinamak
Lepton tea (get it? hehe) at Durian Garden

2. Had pizza, and more pizza plus beer with my colleagues. Great way to end the day! Pizza means great results at work, and celebrating these achievements.
Pizza and beer at Shakeys. We also tried Calda Pizza a few time.

3. Having my fill of crabs at Red Trellis Seafood Garden (check out my review).
Crabs in butter sauce

4. Visiting Iligan (a place called home) after many years

I ate Iligan lechon again after five years! Still the best lechon. More than a meter away and the aroma is tantalizing me already (burp!)

Little known jewel of Iligan, the MSU-IIT Museum.
Conceptualizing a workshop on bioinformatics for graduate students and teachers of local colleges in Northern Mindanao. This, I want to do again!!!

5. Bonding time with my family on my mom's side in Iligan
With my apo, at a cousin's wedding.
With mom's brother

6. My cousin's wedding
My cousin, Dave, waiting for his bride. He cried the moment he saw his bride walk the aisle.
7. Giving a lecture during a farmers' forum
This was catered by Jollibee (hehehe). I also had one of the best menudo I've tasted in our host's home. The highlight of course, was interacting with the famers.

8. Bonding time with Socsksargen Bloggers
At the Robinsons' Wifi Party for Bloggers (Thanks Orman!). I did miss the anniversary party of Ganda Ever So Much (sayang, all those prizes and food, err, I mean all those bloggers I could have met!)

9. Judging at the Regional Eliminations for the Cheez Whiz' Palamantasan.
Two members of the XB GenSan were there, I had to have my picture even if I haven't watch them yet!

10. Not complete without Pasta
I enjoyed long walks with Pasta girl, she's grown so much since I blogger about her:

It's a bit hectic offline, with field visits to corn fields in between, pollination and of course lots of cooking at A Scientist in the Kitchen.

Kwentong ganda ever so much

Akala ni Orman, sya lang ang may kaya
Magsulat ng patula at nakakatawa
Pwes ako rin, gagayahin ko
Sa pagkwekwento ko
Kung paano ko nalaman ang
GandaEverSoMuch.com

Teka, teka, teka
Paano nga ba?
Sa Olaer ko sya unang nakilala
Isnabero nga,
Este, isnabera and lola
At di gaanong pinansin ang beauty ko (hmp!)
Sumunod sa Tuna Festival
Habang judge ako sa cooking contest
Pero di rin kami nagpansinan
Di pa kasi kami close
In fairness to him,
Nung nakaibigan ko na sya
At nalaman nyang nagjudge ako

Anong klaseng blog `to
Sa pangalawa'y, ano na naman kaya
Ang isinulat ni Orman?
At ngayon sa araw-araw
Inaabangan
Ang mga kwento at emo
Para mo na rin kasing naranasan
Ang pinagdaanan nya
Matatawa, maiiyak ka
Parang life talaga.

Kaya’t heto, umabot na
Sa 200 words
Ang blog post na ito
Kaya’t ako’y tapos na po.

Happy 1st anniversary of your blog, Orman!
Ganda Ever So Much!

Pasta playing fetch in the sea

This blog is becoming more like Pasta's blog! Hhmm...

Last weekend, Pasta and I were at the beach with colleagues and trainees. The trainees were finishing their course with us and it was time to party! I was so excited to go to the beach, more so because I was bringing Pasta with me. Pasta's first time to meet the sea was quite funny. She must really be wondering why it was so salty. But later on, she couldn't get enough of swimming. I happily obliged, of course.

Bringing Pasta to the beach was like bringing kids. Leash? Check. Collar? Check. Toys? Check. Towels? Check. Snack (apples)? Check. She had a bag of her own! On the way, she threw up, though. Her first time to go on a long trip!

Having brought her toys, we played fetch. I'd throw her beany to the sea and she'd fetch it for me.She was really up to it!

Pasta meets the sea for the first time

Have you read about the GenSan Gems Giveaway?

Over the weekend, we had a group outing to the beach! I have been in GenSan for over a year, and it's only now that I'm going to Gumasa, Sarangani Province which is well known in this parts for white sand beaches. I was so excited, as finally, I can hit the beach. I was even more excited to get the chance to bring Pasta to the beach. Labrador retrievers love the water, so I was really excited how she would react to the sea.

Pasta's first impression? The sea is salty!!!

Here's a video of her as she meets the sea for the first time.

The elusive Manny Pacquiao

Haayy, I have been here in GenSan for more than a year, but I still have to have my picture taken with Manny himself. I haven't even met Mommy Dionisia nor Jinky! I even pass by his house in GenSan on my way to work, but nary a shadow of him.

So now, I just have to content myself with this cap from his campaign.

Conversations with Pasta

My baby's grown!

And so has her wit! I always have this imaginary conversations with her on whatever's happening here at home. I do talk to her most of the time and she does the listening. Here are snipets of our conversations I've posted in my Facebook status.

Pasta: Ooopps...
***

Me: Nanuod ako ng Clash of the Titans kanina. Pegasus reminds me of you.
Pasta: Pwede kaya ako magkapakpak?
Me: Ambisyosa ka naman dyan! :p
***

Another conversation with Pasta.
Me: Uy may summer kinder class dito sa subdivision. Enroll ko kaya ikaw?
Pasta: Hmp!(sabay taas ng kilay at balik tulog)
***

Astronomy lessons with Pasta.

Me: Pasta, yan ang moon.
Pasta: awwwoo! awwwooo!
Me: Pasta, walang ganyanan...

View from my hotel window

was planning to blog as much as I can while I am here in the US. I got too busy however with work, meetings and more meetings so I have to forgo the blogging part of my trip to the US. One highlight, and something I've been looking forward to, was snow. Yup, I prayed for snow and I got a snow storm last Tuesday. I was snowed in the hotel, watched snow fall and tried to catch up some sleep. Well, here's the view from my hotel window that day.

Snow's melting a bit, so it's much colder these days. Nakakatamad tuloy maglakwatsa!
